Wood stove do's and don'ts

As colder days are upon us, some are turning to their wood stoves for heat without realizing some of the risks that come with it.

Some simple do’s and don’ts can be the difference between a safe and well maintained heat source and potential house fire.wood stove


  • Make sure there is adequate space between the stove and combustible materials such as floors, walls and ceilings.
  • Place the stove on a fire resistant base.
  • Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood.
  • Dispose of ashes in a closed metal conatiner outside of the house.


  • Start a stove fire with flammable fluids such as gasoline.
  • Leave a wood fire burning unattended or overnight
  • Connect a wood stove to a fireplace chimney unless the fireplace has been sealed off.
