If you have renters or homeowners insurance, you have a specific amount of coverage set aside for your personal property. In the event of a total loss, it can be hard to accurately remember what you did or didn't have in the home.

Keeping an inventory of your items BEFORE a loss could help dettermine how efficient your claim will be proccessed. The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents suggest essential items to be put on the inventory like electronics, howewares, appliances and collectiables. Here are some tips to creating a home inventory list:

1. Photoscamera 581126 960 720

Photos of your house is a great way to make sure that all of your items are accounted for. Take your smart phone or digital camera and take pictures from several angles in each room as well as closets and hidden spaces. This way, you can look back on photos to remember what you kept in each room. After you have all of your photos taken, upload them to the cloud or store them on a flash drive and keep the drive in a fire proof safe.

Brown Insurance President Tommy Via recommends taking pictures at Christmas time too, especially of your Christmas tree. He says this helps you also keep tabs on all of the ornaments and gifts that you get each year.

2. Video

Another option is to do a walk-through video of your home. Again, most cell phones have high quality cameras on them and once you are finished with your walk-through, upload it and/or keep it in a secure space.

3. Apps

Here are two fre apps that are suggested by the National Association of Progessional Insurance Agents
